Satellite-based Cellular Backhaul from novelsat

A Cost-effective Alternative to Wired Backhaul

Cellular networks rely predominantly on landline backhaul for communication between the core network (MSC, BSC, etc.) and the BTS on the access side. Due to substantial delay and the traditionally high cost of space-based bandwidth, satellite backhaul is used only when there is no viable terrestrial alternative – for example over long-distances, in isolated locations or in hostile terrain where a copper, fiber or microwave terrestrial connection are either not economically justified or not possible.

NovelSat now offers a much more cost effective alternative to terrestrial cellular backhaul. Through itsNovelSat NS3 technology, NovelSat modems can transmit 30% to 60% more data compared with state of the art equipment based on industry standards using the same bandwidth. With NovelSat DUET echo-cancelling technology, the NovelSat NS3000 satellite modem delivers 100% more capacity.

By dramatically cutting the cost of space-based bandwidth and delivering easy-to-implement high-quality and highly resilient NovelSat modems, satellite-based cellular backhaul can become a reliable, cost-effective component of your cellular backhaul network.

Cellular Backhaul Challenges

Satellite communication has been historically excluded from serving cellular backhaul for a number of reasons including:

• Latency: 250Msec one way delay, while the VoIP can tolerate only 100Msec

• Expensive spectrum: Due to the cost of satellite operation and bandwidth demand

NovelSat Solutions

Where space-based cellular backhaul would never have been considered cost-effective, NovelSat NS3 satellite transmission technology changes the reality. At over 100% bandwidth efficiency boost, NovelSat brings space-based cellular backhaul in line with existing profit points for terrestrial backhaul.

In developing regions, where ARPU is relatively low, ROI on backhaul infrastructure is uncertain and equipment is susceptible to theft and vandalism, it is difficult to justify rolling out mobile services. Island nations, for example, and other isolated locations also suffer from geography and terrain that is not conducive to terrestrial backhaul infrastructure. By combining the accessibility, ease and speed of implementation of satellite-based cellular backhaul with the significant bandwidth cost reduction that NovelSat NS3 and DUET technology deliver, NovelSat can open up markets for mobile operators that previously were not considered profitable.

The satellite-based cellular backhaul business model is flexible enough so that mobile operators can own their space-based backhaul links or outsource them to satellite communications companies, whatever works best for the operator.
